I suspect that the the word bummer originates from the German bummler, meaning “loafer,” as in a lazy person.

'Bummed out' = being lazy

Thank you - that hadn't occurred to me!

Interestingly, "Bum" meaning "bottom" dates back to the 1300s (spelt "Bom"), which actually predates using "Bottom" in that sense (1700s)!
